About Artist

Basic Information

  • Artist Statement

Much of my work focuses on objects and images that define me – particularly through the lens of my Southern heritage. All of these works have familial significance, some from the past and some from the present. These images are haunting reminders of what made me who I am and who my children will be as they grow into adults – rooted in what defines them: family.

In my most recent work, I have continued to explore abstraction using topographical maps as inspiration. These pieces still have roots in my life experiences – most of the topographical maps I have studied for inspiration are locations of significance to my family or myself. I have also continued a balance of detail and loose, organic strokes in works that highlight fauna of the South.

My education includes a Bachelor of Interior Design, with an emphasis in studio art, and a Master of Arts in Teaching in Art Education. Today, I am an artist and an art teacher. My students keep my creative process fresh – each new direction I move in my studio practice begins in my classroom.

My most recent series of paintings focuses on objects and images that define me. All of these works have familial significance, some from the past and some from the present. For me, they are haunting reminders of what made me who I am and who my children will be as they grow into adults – rooted in what defines them, family.

In my next series of paintings, I will continue to explore abstraction using topographical maps as inspiration. I will create large paintiings using maps of significant places in my life using a variety of media; acrylic paint, oil pastel, watercolor crayon, pencil, charcoal and gold leaf.
