About Artist

Basic Information

  • About Me

My work feels soft yet strong like the mother-comfort of a blanket swaddling a newborn. This new direction is an out-growth of the Nick Cave/AS IS residency. I'm fabricating textile sculptures and jewelry that blast out juicy neon colors and textures as loud as exploding yoga mats and jars of Kool-Aid pickles.

"They say what makes art bona fide is authenticity in the work. True to itself and its maker. Dave Hickey said this about three Southern born artists '...(Linda) Benglis, (Robert) Rauschenberg, and (Cy) Twombly sited the visual roots of their works in the riotous swamps and tangled profusion of the American South — in the puddles, vines, goo, cypress roots and mushroom balconies...'

I agree. In my own work I can find it rooted in —the copious stretch marks my body makes. Running stitches in quilts. Childhood road trips with my dad as he traveled the Mid-South making wrestling spot shows. Day trips with my mom as we drove Oklahoma dirt roads to visit aunts, uncles and cousins. Snarls of an overgrown backyard (the trees that appear over five years). The creeping lines of ivy laminating the house front. Ancient Virginia Creeper killed with a slash. Detour signs and water leaks crushing the inner city's streets. Bus trails rolled to and from downtown. Loops cut into red dirt by racehorses on the track. B-52s take-off, circle, land, repeat. Dixie Overland Highway jutted with tattoo shops, bars, pawn shops, and churches." — Kathryn Usher
